Why Peppermint is the Queen of Essential Oils

When you get deep into the realm of essential oils, it can be easy to overlook the basics that got you hooked in the first place. However, some of the most simple oils are also the most powerful. There’s one that really outshines them all though, and that’s peppermint oil! This little gem never leaves my purse. It goes to work, on vacations, home, and everywhere in between. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it!

Breath Freshener – Duh. It’s obvious that peppermint oil is great when you forget to brush your teeth or just want to make sure your breath is extra fresh! One drop is all you need to banish even the nastiest odors (peppermint oil is known to kill bacteria and fungus).

Deodorant – So you don’t want to use peppermint oil as straight up deodorant all the time, but it does come in handy when you forget to use some. It’ll burn a little, but at least you know you won’t smell bad. You gotta do what you gotta do, okay?

Sinus Pressure/Headaches – There’s nothing better than slathering on a bit of peppermint oil when you have sinus pressure going on. The weather in Oklahoma is bipolar AF, which means my sinuses can flare up pretty much at any moment. It’s a lifesaver. In fact, I have it on my face right now as I write this.

Jaw Tension – Do your jaws feel like they’ve been wired shut from clenching them all day at work? NBD. Put a little bit of peppermint oil on them and work it in with a jade roller. It’s going to be the most magical part of your day.

Stomach Aches – On the off chance that I don’t have Midol on hand, peppermint oil does a pretty decent job at cutting down stomach aches thanks to its ability to improve circulation and relax muscles.

Keeping Cool – THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TRICK. If you’ve ever lived in the south and had your AC go out, then you know what it’s like to be trapped in the depths of Satan’s lair. The best way to get relief when it’s so hot you could die? Douse yourself in peppermint oil. I did this so many times at our old apartment that I can’t even tell you. It’s kept me sane and actually cold when it was 90 degrees and I was trying to sleep. It’s AMAZING.

Peppermint oil is one of the most versatile essential oils out there. It can be used aromatically, topically and internally to address a number of health concerns, from muscles aches and  seasonal allergy symptoms, to low energy and digestive complaints. It’s also commonly used to boost energy levels and improve both skin and hair health.

According to a review conducted by the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, peppermint has significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities. It also works as a strong antioxidant, displays anti-tumor actions in lab studies, shows anti-allergenic potential and pain-killing effects, helps to relax the gastrointestinal tract and may be chemopreventive. – Dr. Axe

I could go on forever about all the different uses of peppermint oil, but this is what I use it for the most! What essential oil do you never leave home without?

Nice list to start with – we got some essential oils for Christmas and I have been wondering how to use them. My kids’ teachers would always give them peppermint candies during test week, because peppermint is supposed to help them think more clearly.
